Iâve had a few interesting nicknames over the years. Some of them have been endearing, while othersâlike any of those given by my older brotherâhave been less so. But one of the most random nicknames Iâve acquired over the years is âMushroom Jess.â
In the summer of 2023, I found myself working part-time at a local health food store. The decision to take on that part-time job is best described as one of those intuitive nudges that I had to follow even though it didnât make much logical sense. In my experience, following those nudges tends to be very valuable. This was no different.
I have a background in nutrition, so to feel âback in the gameâ talking to people in the community about health food and supplements was really fun and fulfilling for me. One of the many valuable things that came out of this experience was that it reignited my passion for engaging with people over the healing power of food, and it reminded me of just how much people are in need of good information about food and supplements.
One day, while I had stopped into the store to pick something up, I heard someone (a customer) from across the store yell, âHey! Are you Mushroom Jess?â I looked up and said, âI guess so?â No one had called me that before, but I was the only Jess in the store so I guess it was me. Well, it sort of stuck. Since then, my co-workers and good friends, Kate and Syd, began to call me Mushroom Jess.
Why, you might ask? Because I was always talking to people in the store about the amazing benefits of medicinal mushrooms, which, apparently is not something that most people love to talk about. Well, I am not most people! And no, I am not talking about the magic kind of mushrooms (though I truly think they are all magic!). While the psilocybin-containing mushrooms certainly have potent healing potentials when used properly, Iâm talking about your non-psychoactive varieties. The five main varieties of mushrooms that have been extensively researched for their health benefits are reishi, turkey tail, lionâs mane, cordyceps and chaga.
You may have heard of some or all of these before and be wondering what all the fuss is about as they have been gaining popularity in recent years. They are gaining popularity with good reason. These mushrooms might just be the thing missing from your daily health regimen. Each of the 5 listed above has potent immune-modulating effects on the body, meaning that they improve cell function and help to regulate the immune system. They are also powerful antioxidants that help protect your cells from free-radical damage. In addition, each one has its own unique benefits.
This one is named Turkey Tail because that is exactly what it looks like! Thereâs no mistaking it when you come across it in nature. Turkey tail is used primarily for immune, digestion and liver support. It is particularly helpful for deep immune support and has anti-cancer properties and it is known to be tumour-suppressive. It is also a good prebiotic and is very supportive of gut health.
The magic of reishi might lie in its spiritual legend. It is known as the âmushroom of immortalityâ and is said to have a very high spiritual potency. It is also a powerful adaptogen (hormone-regulating) and it supports respiratory and cardiovascular health. This might be the one you want to try if you deal with anxiety, chronic stress, and struggle to feel grounded. It helps to slow the heart rate, lowers blood pressure and supports deep breathing.
This beautiful mushroom is deeply protective of those it comes into contact with. It is protective to the birch trees that it grows on, and is similarly cell-protective when ingested. It is a strong antioxidant and is therefore known for its anti-ageing properties and ability to support and protect the immune system. As chaga is very common and easy to get, a great way to add this one to your life is by drinking it as a tea as a daily immune support.
I love this little guy for its ability to support and improve cognitive function. You may have noticed that there are brands of coffee and tea that now contain Lionâs Maneâthis is because it is most well-known for its ability to improve mental clarity. If you struggle with brain fog, memory issues or mood swings, you may want to look into this one. You would also want to consider tending to your gut health if you struggle with any of those issues, which Lionâs Mane also supports.
Cordyceps is most commonly used for energy, stamina and stress support. It is a bronchodilator, meaning that it improves the uptake of oxygen into your cells allowing for more energy and endurance. It might also help with recovery post-exercise. In addition to being great for increased energy and stamina, it also supports libido and may even be helpful for fertility issues.
As with any supplement, do your own research before taking anything and make sure there are no contraindications with any medications you might be taking. And above all, listen to what your body is telling you about it. If you are listening, your body will let you know pretty quickly if something is good for it or not. Just because something works great for one person, that doesnât mean it will be the same way for you. Mushrooms are generally quite safe for people unless you have an allergy.
There are many different ways to take these beautiful medicinal mushrooms, so you can choose what feels best to you. The most common options are tinctures, capsules, powders and teas. I personally like the powders as they are highly concentrated, readily absorbable, and easy to add to your daily coffee or smoothie. You can also find some options that contain all 5 of these mushrooms.
There are many companies out there now that have mushroom products, and one of my favourites based here in Canada is Harmonic Arts. (I am not affiliated with them, I just like their stuff!) There are lots of other options as well, and the first thing I recommend is checking out your local health food stores to see what options they have. And of course, if you happen to be a great forager, some of these may be found locally! Just, you know, be careful.đ
